BMP2 is a candidate gene for the auto-somal dominant disease of fibrodysplasia (myositis) ossifi-cans progressiva.It can induce bone formation and regeneration duringearly embryonic development.BMP-2 is synthesized as large precursor molecule firstlyand the mature protein is secreted by proteolytic cleavage. Natural mature BMP-2 monomer has 114 aminoacid residues and has no biological function unless it turnsinto dimmer. Its assumed that mature BMP-2 forms a cys-teine knot with seven conserved cysteine residues. Theactive form can consist of a dimmer of two identical pro-teins or a heterodimer of two related bone morphogeneticproteins
