- Description
- Serum paraoxonase/arylesterase 1 (PON 1), also known as Aromatic esterase 1 (A-esterase 1) or K-45 or Serum aryldialkylphosphatase 1, and encoded by the gene name PON1 or PON, is an esterase and lactonase that is synthesized in the liver and secreted into blood, associated exclusively with high density lipoproteins that belongs to the paraoxonase family. PON1 hydrolyzes the toxic metabolites of a variety of organophosphorus insecticides. This protein has been implicated in protection from atherosclerosis. PON 1 possesses both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Protecting LDL and HDL from lipid peroxidation, PON 1 degrades specific oxidized cholesteryl esters and oxidized phospholipids contained in lipoproteins. PON1 is expressed in liver, but not in heart, brain, placenta, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney or pancreas. Mutations in PON1 have been associated with Microvascular complications of diabetes 5.
