- Description
- Protein bassoon (also known as bassoon presynaptic cytomatrix protein, neuronal double zinc finger protein, zinc finger protein 231) is a cytoplasmic protein encoded by the BSN gene in human (also known as KIAA0434 and ZNF23118). Bassoon is found primarily in neurons in brain and most likely functions as a scaffolding protein involved in organizing the presynaptic cytoskeleton. Murine and rodent orthologs are reported to be detected in axon terminals of hippocampal neurons, where it is highly concentrated in the vicinity of the active zone, indicating a potential involvement in cytomatrix organization at the site of neurotransmitter release.
