Description

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes constitute the largest class of phospholipases, members of which catalyze the hydrolysis of the phospholipid sn-2 ester bond, generating a free fatty acid and a lysophospholipid. PLA2 enzymes are divided into 14 groups (I-XIV), including 20 subgroups (e.g. IA, IB, VIA-1, VIA-2, VIB, etc.), based on sequence homology. Historically, PLA2 enzymes have also been classified based on their biological characteristics into three types, secretory (sPLA2), cytosolic Ca2+-dependent (cPLA2), and cytosolic Ca2+-independent (iPLA2), when sequence data were not available.
