- Description
- Ileal sodium/bile acid cotransporter, also known as, Apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT) or Ileal Na(+)/bile acid cotransporter or Ileal sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (IBAT or ISBT) or Na(+)-dependent ileal bile acid transporter or Sodium/taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide, ileal or Solute carrier family 10 member 2, and encoded by the gene names, SLC10A2 or ASBT or ISBT or NTCP2, is a member of the bile acid:sodium symporter family. SLC10A2 plays a critical role in the sodium-dependent reabsorption of bile acids from the lumen of the small intestine. Mutations in SLC10A2 have been associated with primary bile acid malabsorption.
