Description
Estradiol 17-beta-dehydrogenase 1, also known as, 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (17-beta-HSD 1) or 20 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (20-alpha-HSD) or E2DH or Placental 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, and encoded by the gene name(s), HSD17B1 or E17KSR or EDH17B1 or EDH17B2 or EDHB17, produces an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of estrone to estradiol. HSD17B1 localizes to the cytoplasm. Defects in the conversion of androstenedione to testosterone in the fetal testes by the enzyme HSD17B1 give rise to genetic males with female external genitalia.
