- Description
- Na+, K+-ATPase is an integral plasma membrane protein that maintains the intracellular concentrations of Na+ and K+ ions. It is a P class pump that is composed of two Ï« and two ÉÇ transmembrane subunits. It is also thought to contain a ÎÛ subunit. The 120 kDa Ï« subunit represents the catalytic site. Although the 50 kDa ÉÇ subunit mediates proper folding of newly synthesized Ï« subunits, it is not directly involved in ion transfer. There are four known Ï« isoforms (Ï«1, Ï«2, Ï«3, and Ï«4) and three ÉÇ isoforms (ÉÇ1, ÉÇ2, and ÉÇ3). The Na+, K+-ATPase is ubiquitously expressed in the plasma membrane. However, the individual subunits have different tissue distributions: Ï«1 is ubiquitous
