Description

Retinoic acid-inducible gene 1 protein (RIG-I), also known as DEAD-box protein 58, is coded for by the DDX58 gene. DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), are RNA helicases which are implicated in a number of cellular processes involving RNA binding and alteration of RNA secondary structure. RIG-I contains RNA helicase-DEAD box protein motifs and a caspase recruitment domain (CARD). It is involved in viral double-stranded (ds) RNA recognition and the regulation of innate immune responses. RIG-I is a cell receptor found in the cytoplasm of cells and functions as a pattern recognition receptor that is a sensor for viruses stimulating a type-I Interferon response through the mitochondrial protein IPS-1/MAVS.
