Description

Omalizumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets immunoglobulin E (IgE), a key antibody mediator of allergic responses. It binds to the Fc region of free IgE, preventing IgE from attaching to its high-affinity receptor (Fc¦ÅRI) on mast cells and basophils. This reduces the surface expression of Fc¦ÅRI and inhibits allergen-induced activation of these cells, thereby decreasing the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. It is approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe persistent allergic asthma, chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), and nasal polyps in patients who are inadequately controlled with standard therapies. It is administered via subcutaneous injection.
