This gene encodes the soluble mannose-binding lectin ormannose-binding protein found in serum. The protein encoded belongsto the collectin family and is an important element in the innateimmune system. The protein recognizes mannose andN-acetylglucosamine on many microorganisms, and is capable ofactivating the classical complement pathway. Deficiencies of thisgene have been associated with susceptibility to autoimmune andinfectious diseases.
