Description

ÉÇ-defensins(also designated BD, and HBD in human) are smallcationic peptideswith broad-spectrumantimicrobial activity. ÉÇ-defensins are involved in the resistance of epithelialsurfaces,such as airwaysurface fluid, tomicrobialcolonization. Produced inmucosal epithelia and neutrophils of severalspecies, ÉÇ-defensins are developmentallyregulated. Human ÉÇ-defensin 1, isolated fromthe kidney, has amolecularmass of 3.9 kDa. Human ÉÇ-defensin 1 shares homologywith other ÉÇ-defensinsfromhumanblood filtrate and is also present in nanomolarconcentrationsin human plasma. In addition to the antimicrobial activity of human airway epithelia, ÉÇ-defensin 1may play a role in themucosal defenses of the lung.
