Description
Serine/threonine-protein kinase VRK1, also known as, Vaccinia-related kinase 1, and encoded by the gene name VRK1, is involved in golgi disassembly during the cell cycle. It acts by mediating phosphorylation of downstream target proteins. VRK1 is dispersed throughout the cell but not located on mitotic spindle or chromatids during mitosis. VRK1 is highly expressed in fetal liver, testis and thymus. Mutations in VRK1 have been associated with Pontocerebellar hypoplasia 1A.
