Description

Aducanumab is a recombinant, fully human IgG1 monoclonal antibody developed for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It selectively targets aggregated forms of amyloid-beta (A¦Â), specifically soluble oligomers and insoluble fibrils that constitute amyloid plaques in the brain. Its proposed mechanism is to bind to these pathogenic aggregates, promoting their clearance by microglia through Fc receptor-mediated phagocytosis, thereby reducing amyloid plaque burden. Approved by the U.S. FDA in 2021 under the accelerated approval pathway, it represents the first therapy to claim to address a core pathological process of Alzheimer's, though its clinical benefits and approval remain subjects of significant scientific and medical debate.
